This Month's
Talking Point

Editor: Keith Dixon

ARE YOU GEARED UP FOR WORLD CUP?

Fast approaching is the soccer World Cup, a once every four years opportunity to generate some extra revenue… if you’re organized.

England’s group games are June 12 & 18 (both 8.30pm) and June 23 (4pm); with later stages July 2/3, then July 6/7 for semi-finals and the final on July 11. So are you planning some special meal deals? Or perhaps family finger food snack packs – including pizzas, sausages, pies, kebabs, wraps, chips, for easy eating while the game is on. Maybe you can make an arrangement with local pubs who don’t usually serve food to put on a World Cup special?

Whatever your plans, it pays to publicise it well with posters and leaflets. Make your shop part of the World Cup experience.

QUESTION MARK

As this magazine goes to press, a big question mark hangs over the future of SeaFish, the Government-backed authority on seafood... and all the quality and training standards and events which it has instigated in the frying sector, not least the National Fish & Chip awards.

Until now, it's been funded by a levy on all fish caught for sale in the UK - but a court has ruled this is not legal. The Government itself is leading an appeal against the ruling, but with a General Election looming, the future is far from certain.

Our advice is to continue to enter competitions, and apply for Quality recognition as normal... and keep our fingers crossed that SeaFish survives in its present format. The frying sector needs it.

KEITH'S TROPICS IS A
RIGHT ROYAL TAKEAWAY

Keith Green is much too discreet to tell us if Prince Philip pops in for the occasional kebab, or if the young princes enjoy a carton of slush with their chips... but he certainly backed a winner when he opened his Tropics outlet close to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

ENGINEER JOHN'S
CHIPPY DREAM REALISED

A chippy in Retford is light years away from John Massey's former career as a heavy duty construction engineer, but in opening it he achieved his childhood ambition. See the magazine for more.
